The metal butterflies adorning this helmet were generously donated by artist Amir Shabtai of Neve Tzedek, whose delicate metalwork brings movement, hope, and renewal to the piece.
To create the artwork, I carefully cut a heart-shaped opening through the helmet’s camouflage covering, revealing the hard steel beneath. Surrounding this heart, I formed a rainbow, exposing not only the metal itself but also traces of the helmet’s history. Looking closely, one can still faintly discern the initials of the soldier who once wore it, a poignant reminder of the individual behind the uniform.
The rainbow symbolizes Hashem’s eternal covenant with humanity and His enduring promise. Here, the rainbow heart reflects the unbreakable bond between Hashem and the Jewish people—a symbol of faith, protection, hope, and continuity amid conflict.
The colorful butterflies emerging from the helmet symbolize transformation and healing, carrying the message that beauty, resilience, and life can arise from even the hardest circumstances.
