The artwork explores the concept of negative space. The whole surface area of the helmet is not covered over, rather certain areas of the original olive-green helmet are exposed,representing where it comes from and also allowing pertinent images to be brought forward. The helmet is worn on the head, the place of man’s thoughts and aspiration and hence the artist has chosen to depict relevant symbols that could serve as a source of motivation for a soldier of Israel, such as defendingthe Land and its people; peace, the freeing of the hostages and the rebuilding of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
The book of Genesis depicts how G-d spoke the world into existence using the Hebrew letters, a testimony to their power and significance. The Hebrew letters depicted on the helmet spell the word: ש - ד - י which is a name of G-d that is associated with protection. It is the name found on the mezuzot which protect our homes, just as a helmet protects the head of the soldier.
The Lion symbolizes the Lion of Zion and Yehuda, our rich heritage; whilst also referencing some of the recent missions carried out by the IDF soldiers, namely ‘Operation Rising Lions’ and ‘Operation Roaring Lions’. The image of the lion furtheralludes to the future messianic vision of the Prophet Isaiah (11:6) in which “The lion will lie down with the lamb,” thus heralding world peace and the coming of the Messiah.
The rising sun on the front of the helmet signifies the Jewish nation’s bright future, and the gold piece in the front represents the Tzitz, the golden headplate worn by the Kohen Gadol in the Holy Temple which saysקדש להשם" ,” (Holy to G-d). Just as the Kohen Gadol would go into the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur to atone for the entire Jewish nation, so too, our precious soldiers carry the entire Jewish nation with them when they go into battle.
